Family History

The Family History Group currently meets at the St Mary the Virgin, South Darley, DE4 2JT. on the 3rd Wednesday of every month from 2.00 pm to 4.00 pm. For more details please see the link below.

The purpose of the group is to discuss all aspects of family history, to learn from each other’s experiences and to utilise the various resources available for researching one’s ancestry. One local source is the Derbyshire Record Office, on New Street, which has a wealth of local information available, as well as internet access to the many on-line genealogical databases.

Part of each meeting is usually led by one of our members with a particular interest in some part of their family history that they have traced from the many on-line Genealogy websites. Each member is encouraged to bring details of some unusual fact that they have discovered to each meeting, or even a problem they have with their tree, so that maybe a discussion on that particular topic takes
place.

Potential new members should contact the coordinator Susan Tomlinson, who can be contacted by email, or by telephone on 01629 583763.

If you are thinking of looking into your family trees, you don’t have to subscribe to an expensive on line site.  For a taster, here are a few that are free:
www.freebmd.org.uk    Birth, Marriage, Deaths
www.freecen.org.uk     Census 1841-1911
www.freereg.org.uk     Parish Registers

Make sure you have the free site as many lists start with AD title from an on line site. Follow the guidance.  You will need as much information of a family member as possible, eg name, date of birth and place of birth. Should this not go to plan then I am sure I or one of the Family History Group would be able to help.  Here is my email address:
The more information you collect you might like to consider a chart to
log them  Go to ‘search free family charts’ and print one you like.
