Are you interested in Cars and Motoring? Then this could be the Group for you!
The Group was set up in 2016 and we like to think we offer a broad spectrum of activities related, of course, to Cars and Motoring.
The Group determines its own interests and organises activities to appeal to anyone enthusiastic about cars and motoring – covering vehicles of all ages and types, three, four or more wheels, whether powered by petrol, diesel, steam or electricity, historic, classic or modern, sedate or sporty. It is a truly broad church (or should that be Garage?).
It really doesn’t matter what you drive. Whilst some members are undoubtedly ‘Petrolheads’, and indeed some of us have difficulty in increasing the mileage on our cars because we have too many of them, other members are more restrained in this respect. Cars owned by members include the following: Morris Minor Million, Nissan Figaro, Mazda MX5, Jaguar XK, Lotus Elan M100, Mercedes AMG, Morgan, Honda Civic, etc. etc.
As an example of what we do, here is a brief recap of a fairly typical year, based on what we did in the most recent 12 months:
Our visits to Car shows usually start the year off with some cutting edge technology at The Racing Car Show at the NEC, and in February Race Retro at Stoneleigh offers the chance for some nostalgia to balance things out. Local car shows occupy the summer months, with Ashover being probably the largest and there is a good sprinkling of local shows between April and October. Slightly further afield is Bicester Heritage, which is worth getting up early for despite the distance.
Then there our trips to Museums – the British Motor Museum at Gaydon and the Coventry Motor Museum having been visited recently.
We have had some very interesting visits to facilities that are not ordinarily open to the public. A visit to a private collection of race cars is shown here, there were some fantastic, rare vehicles here. We have also visited David Brown Automotive at Silverstone and Jensen International near Banbury where they restore Interceptors and fit modern GM V8’s in place of the original Chrysler engine. Closer to home, a visit to Bowler Motorsport (now part of JLR) in Belper was fascinating, and right on the doorstep! We also enjoyed our trip to Morgan Motor Co. and Aston Martin in Newport Pagnell.
During the summer months we have regular trips out in our cars around the wonderful Derbyshire countryside. These usually involve a scenic route, stopping for coffee and usually followed by a lunch (often in a pub) before returning home. These are often arranged at short notice and are weather dependant.
Cars and Motoring meet regularly but the day and time depend on what it is that we are doing or where we are going.
