Re-reading Jane Austen
18th century Mills and Boon ? Proto-feminist ? BBC Drama series stand-by ?
What is it about Jane Austen’s work that engages so much contemporary interest? Readers have produced contradictory interpretations of her work since their first publication. Re-reading the novels offers an opportunity to share enjoyment of reading them again – or for the first time – and to explore them within the various social and literary contexts which have led to so many conflicting responses and shaped their popularity.
