The Book Club of the Matlock Area U3A has been running successfully for several years. Our recent Member Survey indicated that many more members wished to take part and, as a consequence, two more groups have now been formed.

The purpose of the groups is to read interesting books, decided upon by members, and then to discuss each book in the subsequent meeting.

Meetings are held at members' homes and there is a nominal charge of 30p for tea / coffee and biscuits.

Book Club One

This group meets on the 2nd Friday of every month at 2.00pm.

This groups' coordinator is Marilyn Clark, who can be contacted email by clicking on her name, or by telephone on 01629 584319.

Book Club Two

This group is currently not meeting but hopes to resume activities soon.

Book Club Three

This group meets on the first Friday of each month, at 2.00pm.

Over the past year we have read and discussed the following:-

  • 1984 by George Orwell
  • Lost for Words by Deric Longden
  • A Spool of Blue Thread by Anne Tyler
  • Consolations of the Forest by Sylvain Tesson
  • Love Song of Queenie Hennessy by Rachel Joyce
  • Snow Falling on Cedars by David Guterson
  • Don't Lets Go to the Dogs Tonight by Alexandra Fuller
  • Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah
  • The Matchmaker of Perigord by Julia Stewart
  • I Saw a Man by Owen Sheers
  • Life After Life by Kate Atkinson

A wide range of reading from humour to classics followed by interesting discussions held at the home of the member who chose the book.
